چکیده

We would like to build story understanding systems which are transparent, modular, and extensible. To this end, we have been working on a new logical approach to narrative understanding that features a GPSG-style grammar and an episodic logic with probabilistic inference rules. The grammar represents phrase structure and the relationship between phrase structure and logical form in a modular, explicit form. The logical representation allows propositional attitudes, unreliable generalizations, and other non-standard constructs, providing a uniform, transparent knowledge representation for both the explicit content of stories and for the background knowledge needed to understand them. It makes systematic use of episodic variables in the representation of episodic sentences, using these to capture temporal and causal relationships. The rules of inference include probabilistic versions of deduction rules resembling forward and backward chaining rules in expert systems. These can be used for predictive, explanatory, and simulative inference. We illustrate our approach with nontrivial grammar fragments (including semantic rules), and with an extended example of forward-chaining inference based on a sentence from Little Red Riding Hood. A pilot implementation is able to make many (though not all) of the inferences we describe. A brief preliminary version of this paper was presented at KR'89 (Schubert and Hwang 1989).

Processing and memory of information presented in narrative or expository texts.

BACKGROUND Previous research suggests that narrative and expository texts differ in the extent to which they prompt students to integrate to-be-learned content with relevant prior knowledge during comprehension. AIMS We expand on previous research by examining on-line processing and representation in memory of to-be-learned content that is embedded in narrative or expository texts. We are par...

An Aggregation Procedure for Building Episodic Memory

When dealing with narrative texts, a system must possess a strong domain theory, and especially knowledge about situations occurring in the world. Otherwise the system must envisage comprehension as a complex process including learning from the texts themselves to improve its capabilities. This requires managing past solutions and completing them when analoguous situations happen in other texts...

Modeling and Advanced Exploitation of eChronicle Information

In this paper, we describe NKRL (Narrative Knowledge Representation Language), a conceptual modeling formalism for taking into account the semantic characteristics of this important component of eChronicle information represented by the ‘narrative’ documents. In these documents, the main part of the information consists in the description of the ‘events’ that relate the real or intended behavio...

A Glimpse of Nkrl, the "narrative Knowledge Representation Language"

In this paper, I describe NKRL, a language expressly designed for representing, in a standardised way, the semantic content (the "meaning") of complex narrative texts. After having introduced the four "components" (specialised sub-languages) of NKRL, I will give some examples of its practical modalities of use. I will then describe, in a very sketchy way, the inference techniques and the natura...

Book Reviews Representation and Management of Narrative Information: Theoretical Principles and Implementation

Gian Piero Zarri’s book summarizes more than a decade of his research on knowledge representation for narrative text. The centerpiece of Zarri’s work is theNarrative Knowledge Representation Language (NKRL), which he describes and compares to other competing theories. In addition, he discusses how to model the meaning of narrative text by giving many real-world examples. NKRL provides three dif...
